In summary, we may say that it was the desire of the economist to depart from what is non-existent, and the desire of the philosopher to abandon what is corrupt and to bring to light a true order of things. The forms that result from this joining are even more perfect. One sees that while the first method consists in pushing the individual towards an extraneous extremity, the second tries to dig up a primordial matter. This is what lies behind the desire of Spinoza, of Cabet, of Proudhon and of Fourier: it seems to them that matter is amorphous and can only be built by the vision of the creator, then all the rest is an arbitrary addition which should be eliminated.
The European nations had not the same kind of independence in the Middle Ages as the United States had in the sixteenth century.
